Tesla will sell you a retrofit turn signal stalk for $350

Tesla has recently started selling retrofit turn signal stalks for certain Model 3 vehicles in China. This move comes after Tesla faced backlash for deleting the turn signal stalks in the update of the Model 3 back in 2023. The decision to remove the stalks was part of various cost-cutting measures implemented by Tesla at the time.

The turn signal stalks are now available as an accessory on Tesla’s China website, priced at 2,499 yuan (approximately $350). These stalks are designed to replace the buttons on the steering wheel that were introduced in the Model 3 Highland refresh. The deletion of the turn signal stalks had been a controversial decision by Tesla, as many drivers found them to be more convenient and familiar than the buttons on the steering wheel.

Interestingly, Tesla had also removed the gear selection lever in the Model Y Juniper refresh earlier this year but decided to bring back the turn signal stalk. This decision was likely influenced by feedback from customers and Tesla’s head engineer Lars Moravy’s acknowledgment that they may have “deleted too much” from the Model 3.

The retrofit turn signal stalks are currently only available for Model 3 vehicles produced after February 7, 2025, in China. Tesla plans to eventually offer the retrofit for older Model 3s as well, but a timeline for this has not been specified. The installation of the turn signal stalks needs to be done by technicians at a Tesla service center and involves purchasing and installing a new steering wheel assembly.

While the retrofit is currently exclusive to China, there is speculation that it may eventually be rolled out to other regions. Tesla has a history of releasing new features and accessories in China first before expanding them globally. However, it is unclear when or if the retrofit turn signal stalks will be made available in other countries.

In conclusion, the availability of the retrofit turn signal stalks for the Model 3 in China is a step towards addressing customer feedback and improving the driving experience for Tesla owners. It remains to be seen if this accessory will become available in other regions and whether older Model 3s will also receive the retrofit option.
