Best for: value for money

The Toyota Hilux is a renowned member of the Toyota family, known for its versatility, reliability, and dependability. It has been a strong contender in the European market, giving tough competition to the Ranger.

Comfort and sophistication are key features of the Hilux, regardless of the trim level. While it may not match the Ranger in terms of touring comfort and body control, it still offers a decent ride and handling experience. However, there is noticeable wind and road noise inside the cabin.

Buyers have the option of choosing between a 148bhp 2.4-litre or a more powerful 201bhp 2.8-litre four-cylinder diesel engine. The 2.8-litre engine stands out for its real-world performance and refinement, making it the preferred choice for many.

In addition to the standard models, there is also the Hilux GR Sport, which features enhanced suspension and aggressive styling. However, it falls short of the Ford Ranger Raptor when it comes to off-road capabilities.

The Hilux boasts a higher carrying capacity compared to its competitors, making it a favorite among cargo carriers. With options for single- and double-cab bodystyles, as well as an extended cab variant, there is a Hilux model to suit every need.

Capable of towing up to 3500kg and carrying a payload of up to 1000kg, the Hilux is a reliable workhorse. While its loadbed may be slightly shorter than the Ranger’s, it is still a practical choice for those in need of a versatile pickup truck.

Pricing for the Toyota Hilux starts at around £31,000 for an entry-level double-cab model. For those looking for a well-equipped and slightly more expensive option, the Invincible X model offers a great value for money.
