The race to develop the next generation of electric vehicle (EV) batteries has reached a new milestone with the launch of the MG4, the first mass-produced EV to feature a semi-solid-state battery. Priced at around $10,000 (73,800 yuan), the MG4 is set to revolutionize the EV market in China.
The semi-solid-state battery technology used in the MG4 is a game-changer in the industry. Manufactured by Suzhou Qingtao Power Technology Co, a global leader in solid-state Li-ion EV batteries, the manganese-based lithium-ion battery offers improved performance and efficiency compared to traditional lithium iron phosphate batteries.
The MG4 comes equipped with a single front-mounted 120 kW (161 hp) electric motor, providing ample power for daily driving needs. The switch to a semi-solid-state battery is the most significant change in the new variant, promising better range and faster charging times.
Optional features for the MG4 include a 360-degree camera, front and rear radars, front badging, a tinted roof, and privacy glass. The interior is spacious and modern, with a 15.6″ floating infotainment system and cutting-edge smart tech features.
With two battery pack options available, 42.8 kWh and 53.9 kWh, the MG4 offers impressive CLTC ranges of 437 km (272 miles) and 530 km (330 miles) respectively. Prices start at 73,800 yuan ($10,000) for the base “Comfort” trim, going up to 105,800 yuan ($15,000) for the top-of-the-line “Smart” edition model.
The launch of the MG4 marks a significant step forward in the EV industry, with SAIC MG claiming it to be the first mass-produced EV globally with a semi-solid-state battery. More details on pricing, range, battery capacity, and other specs will be revealed in September, with deliveries expected to begin by the end of 2025. The future of EV technology is looking brighter than ever with innovations like the MG4 leading the way.
