Continental Unveils Invisible Biometrics Sensing Display at CES
Continental showcased its latest advancement in in-car technology at the Consumer Electronics Show with the introduction of the Invisible Biometrics Sensing Display. This innovative system is designed to enhance passive safety measures for vehicle occupants.
Utilizing biometrics, which involves the identification of individuals based on biological characteristics, this cutting-edge technology takes it a step further by utilizing a camera and laser projector to detect occupants within the vehicle.
The Invisible Biometrics Sensing Display operates through a high-resolution OLED screen, remaining completely invisible to the naked eye. Developed in collaboration with Trinamix, this system employs 3D distance mapping to optimize airbag deployment and ensure the proper fastening of seatbelts and other restraint devices in the event of a collision.
Furthermore, this advanced technology is capable of monitoring vital signs such as the driver’s heart rate to detect stressful situations or potential medical emergencies. The core imaging technology comprises a 1.5-megapixel near-infrared camera and a laser dot projector that poses no risk to occupants’ eyes.
Developed by Trinamix, the system captures reflections from light emitted by the projector, operating within the invisible light spectrum to remain undetectable by vehicle occupants. Additionally, it can measure the distance between the driver and the instrument panel, powered by AI algorithms.
Unlike other driver monitoring systems, Continental’s Invisible Biometrics Sensing Display is uniquely designed for car interiors, utilizing a single hardware module. The developers believe that its contactless and discreet nature will provide new design possibilities and increase user acceptance.
While Bosch and Mercedes-Benz have previously introduced driver monitoring systems, Continental’s Invisible Biometrics Sensing Display sets a new standard in automotive safety technology. With its seamless integration and advanced features, this system represents the future of in-car biometric technology.
