The global electric vehicle (EV) market saw significant growth in the first half of 2024, with nearly 1.5 million units sold in June alone. This represented a 15% increase compared to the previous year, with plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) experiencing a substantial 41% jump in sales. The overall market share for EVs and hybrids reached 22%, with battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) holding a 14% share.

In terms of popular models, the Tesla Model Y emerged as the top-selling EV in June, with 119,503 registrations. Following closely behind was the Tesla Model 3, which recorded 65,267 deliveries thanks to the company’s end-of-quarter push. BYD also made a strong showing in the top 10, securing seven spots with their competitive pricing strategies.

A standout performer in the top 10 was the Li Auto L6, a midsize SUV that garnered 23,864 registrations in just its third month on the market. BYD’s Qin L model also made waves by entering the top 10 in its debut month with 18,021 registrations. Other notable models included the Zeekr 001, Xiaomi SU7, GAC Aion Y, and Volkswagen ID.3, all of which achieved record sales in June.

Volvo saw success outside the top 20 with the EX30 model, which achieved a record 11,711 registrations. The Hyundai Ioniq 5, Audi Q4 e-Tron, and MG4 also posted strong sales figures in June. However, Wuling’s Mini EV and Bingo models missed the top 20 for the first time in years.

In terms of overall standings, the Tesla Model Y and BYD Song maintained their positions at the top in the first half of 2024. The Tesla Model 3 overtook the BYD Qin Plus to claim third place, mirroring the results from previous years. The market trend also saw larger models gaining prominence over small city cars.

Looking ahead, it is likely that the top three positions will remain unchanged for the rest of 2024, marking the third consecutive year with the same standings. With a diverse range of models from various segments in the top 20, the EV market continues to evolve and adapt to consumer preferences.
