Car Design Competition: Innovative Propulsion System and Unique Appeal

The design of a lightweight and efficient car with a revolutionary propulsion system is crucial in shaping its overall appearance. The lines and contours of the car should be not only attractive but also functional, echoing seamlessly from the front to the sides and rear.

During a recent car design competition, there was a common tendency among students to propose shapes that were fuller and more GT-like than what was envisioned by industry professionals. This led to some of the best development sketches not being fully translated into the final 3D models.

Even seasoned professionals like Spowers, Callum, and Day acknowledge that car design is a meticulous process that requires careful attention to detail and constant feedback from critics. This is why listening to the opinions of bosses and peers is essential for aspiring car designers.

Out of the pool of talented students, Haoyuan Bai emerged as the winner of the competition. Bai, who was already an intern at Nio in Shanghai, impressed the judges with his well-proportioned design that featured eye-catching rear spats. Other commendable participants included Zefan Shang, Yuyong Yin, and Bo Silkens, each showcasing great potential in their designs.

What set Bai apart was his ability to strike the right balance in terms of volumes and proportions. His design was not overly tall or full like some of the others, making it a standout choice for a proper supercar. This unique appeal caught the attention of Riversimple managing director Spowers, who believed that Bai’s design had the potential to make a mark in the automotive industry.

Spowers described the design competition as a positive experience, highlighting the efforts put in by both the students and industry professionals. While these were just the first steps in the journey of car design, the competition served as a valuable learning experience for all involved.

As Spowers contemplates the next steps, it is clear that the future of car design is in good hands with talented individuals like Haoyuan Bai and the other participants pushing the boundaries of innovation. Stay tuned for more updates on the latest developments in the world of automotive design.
