McLaren Unveils Power-Dense MHP-8 V8 Engine for W1 Supercar
McLaren’s latest creation, the W1 supercar, is powered by a groundbreaking 3988cc, twin-turbo, MHP-8 V8 engine. This engine is a true engineering marvel, boasting an impressive 230bhp per litre and a record-breaking rev limit of 9200rpm.
Manufactured by Ricardo in Worthing, the MHP-8 V8 marks a significant milestone for McLaren Automotive, as it is the most power-dense combustion engine ever produced by the company. Ricardo has been a trusted partner of McLaren since 2011, with a track record of delivering high-performance engines, starting with the M838T for the MP4-12C.
One of the key innovations in the design of the MHP-8 V8 is the use of lightweight, hollow intake valves that allow for the implementation of single valve springs. This reduces the load on the valvetrain and helps prevent valve bounce, a common issue in high-performance engines. Additionally, the engine features hollow exhaust valves filled with sodium to efficiently dissipate heat from the heads.
To further improve performance and efficiency, the engine incorporates Diamond-Like-Coating (DLC) on the finger followers, reducing friction in the valvetrain system. The cylinder bores are plasma spray coated, eliminating the need for cast iron liners and reducing weight and friction.
The MHP-8 V8 also features dry sump lubrication with an electronically controlled variable displacement oil pump, minimizing power consumption. The engine utilizes both direct and port fuel injection for optimal fuel and air mixing at different engine speeds.
With twin-scroll turbos and a hybrid e-module mounted on the transmission, the MHP-8 V8 engine delivers an impressive 915bhp. When combined with the hybrid system, the power output of the W1 supercar reaches a staggering 1258bhp, accompanied by 988lb ft of torque from 2500rpm.
The meticulous attention to detail and innovative technologies employed in the MHP-8 V8 engine make it a true powerhouse, propelling the McLaren W1 to new heights of performance and exhilaration on the road.
