The ultra-luxury ‘living room on wheels’ microcar just got upgraded

Club Car has announced a major upgrade to its electric microcar, the CRU, in the form of a new lithium-ion battery option. This new addition promises to bring the stylish low-speed vehicle into the modern era of electric vehicles.

The CRU, originally designed in collaboration with BMW Designworks, garnered attention for its innovative “living room on wheels” concept. With wrap-around bench seating, a central table, and space for up to six passengers with swiveling front seats, the CRU offered a unique take on neighborhood electric vehicles. However, its lead-acid battery pack was notably outdated. With the introduction of the lithium-ion battery option, the CRU now boasts improved performance, including three times the range of the original model and significantly faster charging times.

Brant Mitchell, Senior Director of Product Management at Club Car, expressed excitement about the new lithium option, stating that it offers customers a smarter, longer-lasting power solution that enhances the overall driving experience. The lighter weight of the lithium battery also contributes to improved handling and ride quality, ideal for leisurely drives around neighborhoods, campuses, resorts, and gated communities.

While specific details on range and charging times have not been released, the upgrade is expected to provide a substantial improvement over the previous model. The CRU maintains its top speed of 25 mph, meeting Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard regulations for low-speed vehicles. Equipped with full lighting, turn signals, seat belts, a backup camera, and other safety features, the CRU remains a safe and stylish option for navigating public roads with speed limits up to 35 mph.

The lithium battery option does come at a premium, adding nearly $2,500 to the base price of the lead acid CRU. Customers can also opt for a larger 16 kWh battery, pushing the price above $31,000. However, Club Car emphasizes the long-term savings and minimal maintenance associated with lithium batteries, making it a worthwhile investment for those seeking a more advanced electric vehicle experience.

With this latest upgrade, Club Car reaffirms its commitment to offering innovative and stylish low-speed electric vehicles that cater to a niche market between traditional golf carts and full-size EVs. The future of the CRU looks promising, as it continues to push boundaries in the realm of electric microcars.
