Subaru is reportedly gearing up to launch an all-electric pickup truck, drawing inspiration from its iconic Brat model from the late ’70s and ’80s. Partnering with Toyota, Subaru is set to introduce several new electric vehicles in the coming years, including the rumored electric Brat pickup.
The original Subaru Brat, also known as Brumby in Australia, was a compact two-seater pickup truck that gained popularity for its unique design and functionality. With the resurgence of electric vehicles in the automotive industry, Subaru is looking to revive the Brat as an EV, based on Toyota’s “EPU” electric pickup concept showcased at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show.
While specific details about the electric Brat pickup have not been confirmed, it is expected to retain the original model’s compact and stumpy design. The vehicle is likely to feature an all-wheel-drive (AWD) powertrain with multiple drive modes for various terrains, similar to the original Brat’s “on-demand” 4WD system.
The partnership between Subaru and Toyota has already produced successful electric models like the bZ4X and Solterra SUVs. The upcoming electric pickup is expected to offer a smaller, possibly two-seat option to differentiate it from Toyota’s larger electric truck concept.
Although Subaru has not confirmed whether the electric Brat pickup will be available in the US, the company recently introduced the 2026 Trailseeker at the 2025 NY Auto Show. The Trailseeker is Subaru’s second global EV, offering more cargo space and a taller roof than the Solterra, with a range of up to 260 miles.
As larger trucks and SUVs continue to dominate the US market, the electric Subaru pickup may face challenges in appealing to American consumers. However, with the increasing demand for electric vehicles and the nostalgia surrounding the original Brat model, the electric pickup could attract a niche audience.
