Toyota is shaking up its naming convention for future electric models, moving away from the alphanumerical approach introduced with the bZ4X. The bZ4X, launched in 2022 as Toyota’s first EV, featured a name derived from its meaning – ‘beyond zero’ emissions, the car’s size (4), and its crossover design (X).
However, the latest electric model from Toyota, the Urban Cruiser, breaks away from this convention and instead draws from the brand’s rich history of model names. Andrea Carlucci, Toyota Europe’s director of marketing and product development, revealed that the bZ4X name is likely to remain unique in the lineup. This decision to return to word-based names was driven by feedback from Europe and Japan, with a focus on simplifying the range of models for consumers.
Carlucci emphasized the importance of rationalizing the number of nameplates to avoid confusion and streamline the lineup. The Urban Cruiser, recently unveiled at the Brussels motor show, will be produced in India alongside the Suzuki eVitara. While Carlucci did not provide a timeline for EV production in Europe, he emphasized Toyota’s commitment to selling vehicles where they are manufactured.
When asked about Toyota’s strategy for standing out in the EV market, Carlucci highlighted the brand’s expertise in battery technology and energy management. He emphasized Toyota’s strong reputation for reliability and trust among customers, particularly in the realm of hybrid and EV technology. Carlucci also hinted at the potential for Toyota’s performance division, GR, to play a role in future EV development, while acknowledging that GR currently focuses on internal combustion engines.
Overall, Toyota’s shift towards using familiar names for its electric models reflects a strategic decision to simplify the lineup and build on the brand’s reputation for innovation and reliability in the EV market. With a focus on battery technology and energy management, Toyota is poised to continue its legacy of producing high-quality, trustworthy electric vehicles for consumers worldwide.
