Enso Launches EV-Specific Tyres for Passenger Electric Vehicles
A year after introducing EV-specific tyres for electric vans and taxis, British company Enso has now unveiled its first range of tyres designed for passenger electric vehicles. The new tyres are specifically tailored for popular models such as the Tesla Model 3 and Y, as well as the Jaguar I-Pace.
With over 1.5 million electric cars currently on UK roads and an estimated 450,000 more expected to be sold this year, the demand for EV tyres is rapidly growing. In 2022, the UK tyre market saw the sale of 40 million car tyres, valued at around £2.3 billion. By 2030, this market is projected to reach £3.9 billion.
Despite being a smaller player compared to industry giants like Michelin and Continental, Enso stands out due to its direct sales approach and focus on technical innovation. The company is committed to reducing particulate pollution by enhancing tyre wear rates.
Founder and CEO of Enso, Gunnlaugur Erlendsson, explains, “The weight of EVs puts significant strain on tyres, especially with high torque and urban driving conditions. By using superior materials, construction techniques, and data analysis, we aim to minimize tyre wear and optimize performance for EVs.”
Addressing challenges such as balancing tyre wear, rolling efficiency, handling performance, and noise levels, Enso and other EV tyre manufacturers are continuously innovating to meet the evolving needs of electric vehicles.
Jaap Leendertse, general manager of tyre development at Falken Tyres, notes, “Modern tyres are supporting heavier vehicle loads than ever before, requiring enhanced durability. We are constantly striving to improve tyre longevity in response to the changing demands of electric vehicles.”
Studies have shown that EVs wear tyres 20% faster than traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. Brands like Tesla, Citroën, Mercedes, and BMW are identified as having higher than average tyre replacement rates, highlighting the importance of specialized EV tyres.
