Hitachi Rail, in collaboration with Angel Trains and TransPennine Express, recently completed a groundbreaking intercity battery trial train in the UK. This trial, a first of its kind in the country, showcased the superiority of single battery technology over traditional diesel engines in terms of cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits.

The trial, which took place in the north of England, demonstrated the significant advantages of powerful batteries in terms of emissions reduction, fuel savings, and improved air quality. Hitachi, a pioneer in passenger battery trains with successful deployments in Japan and Europe, unveiled a 700 kW battery that propelled the train to speeds exceeding 75 mph and covered a distance of over 70 km. Remarkably, the battery matches the weight of a diesel engine and fits seamlessly into the undercarriage space, with no risk of track degradation or impact on passenger comfort.

Fuel savings were a standout feature of the trial, with costs reduced by an impressive 35-50%. The implementation of an “Eco-mode” allowed the battery to fully power sections of the route, showcasing its readiness for real-world applications. This success has paved the way for Hitachi to develop a full intercity battery-electric train with an estimated range of 100-150 km. This innovation will enable non-electrified routes to operate on battery power, eliminating the need for costly infrastructure like overhead wires in tunnels or stations.

Rail Minister Lord Hendy lauded the trial’s success, emphasizing the role of this technology in decarbonizing the railways and providing greener, more reliable journeys for passengers. Hitachi’s commitment to utilizing the UK battery supply chain sets it apart as the only train manufacturer actively pursuing battery technology development in the country. Collaborations with Innovate UK and the University of Birmingham are driving advancements in next-gen battery technology, ensuring continued progress in sustainable transportation solutions.
