US set to tighten AI and smart car tech restrictions on China-report

The US administration is ramping up efforts to limit China’s technological influence by implementing new measures targeting the automotive and artificial intelligence (AI) sectors, as reported by Bloomberg.

These latest actions are aimed at bolstering US technological leadership and addressing escalating national security concerns related to Chinese and Russian technologies.

A significant component of this crackdown is a recent rule that prohibits the import and sale of personal smart cars with ties to China or Russia.

The new automobile policy, which has been in the works for approximately a year, specifically bars the import or sale of connected vehicles and components with substantial connections to China or Russia.

The primary goal of this policy is to safeguard consumer privacy and national security by thwarting potential data collection and remote manipulation by foreign adversaries.

Furthermore, US officials are contemplating expanding these restrictions to encompass commercial vehicles like buses and trucks, according to the report.

In a separate move, an executive order on AI has been issued to facilitate leasing federal land to companies for constructing AI data centers, under the condition that they commit to building these facilities.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to limit the sale of AI chips to global data centers and could impact companies such as Nvidia.

President Joe Biden emphasized the importance of maintaining the US’s competitive edge in AI development and highlighted that the executive order will expedite the establishment of AI infrastructure in the US, focusing on economic competitiveness, national security, AI safety, and clean energy.

Additionally, US officials are contemplating imposing new tariffs on Chinese semiconductors and are in the process of finalizing a cybersecurity executive order, partly in response to a significant hack attributed to China.

Navtej Dhillon, the deputy director of the US National Economic Council, underscored the focus on investing in critical technologies and domestic sectors vital for national security and economic competitiveness.

These measures underscore the US government’s commitment to safeguarding its technological advancements and protecting national interests in the face of increasing global competition.
