The Evolution of the Jaguar XF: A Methodical Expansion
When the previous generation XF made its mark with a dramatic insurrection into German territory, the second-generation took a more methodical approach to expanding its place in buyers’ minds.
Rule number one for the XF was to be instantly recognisable as a Jaguar, maintaining the same raked shape that had become synonymous with the brand.
Adapting this familiar profile to a new platform was a challenging task, with the smaller XE’s size influencing the dimensions of the modular aluminum-intensive architecture. The use of cutting-edge exotic alloys, self-piercing rivets, and structural adhesives set the new XF apart. This innovative construction resulted in significant benefits, including a weight reduction of up to 190kg, a 28% increase in rigidity, and a 51mm extension of the wheelbase.
Despite these advancements, the changes were cleverly integrated into the design, with the elongated rear deck and shortened front overhang giving the car a sleeker appearance. In fact, the new XF was even slightly shorter than its predecessor, showcasing a more modern and refined aesthetic.
The body of the XF offered near-perfect weight distribution, supported by a chassis featuring front double wishbones and Jaguar’s integral link rear suspension. The inclusion of new passive dampers with adjustable valves allowed for a smoother ride at lower speeds, gradually adjusting to firmer settings as the pace increased.
Under the hood, the XF was predominantly powered by the 2.0-litre, all-aluminium Ingenium diesel engine, available in 161bhp and 178bhp variants. The eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox remained a popular choice, while a six-speed manual option, developed in collaboration with ZF, was also offered.
In 2020, the XF underwent a facelift, introducing a more streamlined front end, a sportier rear diffuser, and updated headlights inspired by the F-Type. This redesign showcased an elegant interpretation of Jaguar’s classic ‘fuselage’ styling, further solidifying its place in the luxury sedan segment.
