Visteon, a US-based automotive electronics supplier, has partnered with Qualcomm Technologies to collaborate on advancing artificial intelligence (AI)-powered cockpit systems for the automotive industry. This partnership aims to create a new cockpit system that will utilize Visteon’s cognitoAI framework and Qualcomm Technologies’ Snapdragon Cockpit Elite Platform, incorporating a hybrid multimodal AI architecture.

The innovative cockpit system will offer support for rich multimedia, on-device AI, and enhanced 3D graphics to deliver a highly responsive in-vehicle experience. By leveraging a combination of speech, cameras, and vehicle data inputs, the system will enable predictive recommendations, environmental awareness, and multimodal reasoning, enhancing the overall driving experience for both drivers and passengers.

Visteon’s President and CEO, Sachin Lawande, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating that the integration of AI-driven insights will revolutionize the way individuals interact with their vehicles. He emphasized the transformative impact of this technology on creating a truly intelligent cockpit experience.

The hybrid multimodal AI architecture being developed by Visteon and Qualcomm Technologies will combine advanced large language models for context-aware and proactive interactions. The AI models will be quantised, optimised, and converted using the Qualcomm AI Engine Direct (QNN) to run on the Qualcomm Hexagon Neural Processing Unit (NPU) for edge inference on the Snapdragon Cockpit Elite Platform.

The Snapdragon Cockpit Elite Platform features the Qualcomm Hexagon NPU for multimodal AI, Qualcomm Oryon CPU, and the latest generation Qualcomm Adreno GPU. This platform supports multimedia capabilities, on-device AI, edge orchestration, advanced gaming, and 3D graphics while meeting ASIL-B automotive safety standards and offering long-term support with API compatibility.

Moreover, Visteon’s cognitoAI framework enables real-time decision-making by integrating language models with embedded vehicle knowledge and ECU data. Unlike cloud-based systems, cognitoAI operates within the vehicle, providing increased adaptability and long-term evolution aligned with the industry’s shift towards software-defined vehicles.

Nakul Duggal, General Manager of Qualcomm Technologies’ automotive and industrial group, highlighted the transformative impact of high-performance intelligent computing on in-vehicle experiences. He emphasized the collaborative effort with Visteon to harness the power of the Snapdragon Cockpit Elite platform, setting a new standard for automotive technology and driving innovation in the industry.

Overall, the partnership between Visteon and Qualcomm Technologies signifies a significant advancement in AI-powered cockpit systems for vehicles, offering a seamless and intelligent driving experience for consumers. The integration of advanced AI technologies and multimedia capabilities is poised to redefine the future of automotive innovation.
