The Volkswagen ID 4: A Closer Look at the Interior
The interior of the Volkswagen ID 4 takes inspiration from the brand’s ID range, with a design that loosely resembles the Volkswagen Golf. However, the cockpit of the ID 4 is even more minimalistic, featuring a conspicuous lack of buttons and switches that may surprise those accustomed to cars like the Tiguan.
One of the standout features of the ID 4’s interior is the leatherette steering wheel, which includes haptic touchpads for controlling music, display, and cruise control. While innovative, some users may find these touchpads slow and frustrating to use, with a tendency to be pressed accidentally.
Standard features in the ID 4 include interior ambient lighting, heated front seats, and a climate windscreen. The car also comes equipped with a 5.3-inch driver’s display and a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, with an optional 12-inch touchscreen available for those looking for a larger display.
Volkswagen’s infotainment systems have faced criticism in the past for being difficult to use, slow, and prone to crashing. However, the latest version of the ID software shows significant improvement in terms of usability and stability. While still not perfect, the system in the ID 4 is a step in the right direction.
The material quality in the ID 4’s interior is commendable, with comfortable ‘Style’ seats, organic shapes in the door-card mouldings, and a modern design that minimizes physical switchgear. The overall ambience of the cabin is relaxing, aided by the low scuttle and excellent forward visibility.
One unique feature of the ID 4 is the ID Light concept, which uses different colors and patterns to convey information such as navigation directions, charging status, and incoming calls. While occasionally useful, some may find it distracting. Despite this, the fundamental ergonomics of the interior are excellent, and rear legroom is surprisingly generous.
In terms of practicality, the ID 4 excels with a spacious boot measuring 543 liters. While not the largest in its class, it outperforms competitors like the Kia EV6 and Renault Scenic. However, it falls short of the Tesla Model Y, which boasts a larger boot capacity of 854 liters with all seats up.
