Introducing the Future of Volkswagen MPVs: The Budd-e Concept
The 2016 Budd-e concept made waves with its innovative design and forward-thinking approach to electric vehicles. Measuring 4597mm in length, the Budd-e concept was positioned as a modern and versatile option for families and daily commuters alike.
With new sliding door and seating concepts in development, Volkswagen is aiming to compete with the latest offerings in the electric MPV market. The goal is to provide a high-utility electric vehicle with a focus on practicality and functionality.
While the ID Buzz caters to premium lifestyle buyers, the Microbus variant of the Budd-e concept is tailored towards families seeking a no-nonsense, highly usable electric vehicle. This shift in focus is driven by the emergence of new electric MPVs from China, like the Zeekr Mix, which offer unique features and flexible interiors.
The Touran, a longstanding favorite in Volkswagen’s lineup, has sold over 2.6 million units globally since its launch in 2003. Despite facing competition from SUVs in recent years, the Touran remains a popular choice for European consumers.
The new MPV is expected to be built on an enhanced version of Volkswagen’s MEB+ platform or the newer SSP platform. It will offer a choice of batteries ranging from 60-80kWh and options for front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.
If approved for production, the new MPV could hit the market by 2027 or 2028, potentially reviving the Touran badge and aligning with Volkswagen’s strategy of using traditional names for future EV models.
