Volkswagen’s new electric SUV looks sleek, but there’s a catch

Volkswagen is gearing up for the debut of its new T-Roc SUV, set to take place in less than a month. The popular SUV is making a transition to electric power, marking a significant shift for the brand. With a unique new powertrain reminiscent of Toyota’s technology, the new T-Roc is expected to make waves in the market.

The T-Roc was Volkswagen’s second best-selling SUV globally last year, following the Tiguan. The brand confirmed earlier this year that a new generation of the T-Roc is set to arrive in 2025, and now enthusiasts are getting a sneak peek at what’s in store.

Volkswagen recently revealed a preview of the redesigned T-Roc, showcasing a sleek new design that draws comparisons to a Porsche from certain angles. According to reports from Autocar, the second-generation T-Roc will be the first Volkswagen vehicle to feature a new full-hybrid powertrain. This powertrain, similar to the one found in the Toyota Prius, combines a gas engine with an electric motor that can work together seamlessly.

Volkswagen’s CEO, Thomas Schäfer, explained that the company is exploring hybrid technology as certain regions are moving towards hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). The new T-Roc is expected to launch globally, including in Europe and South America, and there is potential for it to make its way to the United States as well. Schäfer noted that HEVs are gaining traction in the US market, with several automakers using hybrids as a transitional step towards full electric vehicles.

While the hybrid system will not be featured in every new model based on the platform, it will be utilized in upcoming models like the Golf and Tiguan. Volkswagen is set to unveil the new T-Roc at the Munich Motor Show in Germany, starting on September 9. Alongside the T-Roc, the brand is also expected to showcase the new ID.2X electric SUV. More details, including powertrain specifications and pricing, will be revealed closer to the launch date.

The integration of hybrid technology in Volkswagen’s lineup signifies a strategic move towards sustainable mobility. As the automotive industry continues to evolve, Volkswagen is positioning itself as a key player in the transition to electrification. Stay tuned for more updates on the new T-Roc and Volkswagen’s electrification efforts.
