Volvo Trucks continues to dominate the heavy electric truck segment in Europe, maintaining a 47% market share by the end of 2024. The company has also made significant strides in North America, securing over 40% market share in the same year. In Europe, Volvo Trucks registered 1,970 electric trucks in 2024, with the top five markets being Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Switzerland.
President of Volvo Trucks, Roger Alm, expressed pride in leading the transformation towards zero-emission transport, highlighting the company’s strong electric truck portfolio for regional, city, and construction transport. He also announced the upcoming release of a new electric truck capable of running longer distances of up to 600km on a single charge.
Since commencing serial production of electric trucks in 2019, Volvo Trucks has expanded its electric range to eight models and delivered over 4,800 electric trucks globally. Alm emphasized the rapid increase in the footprint of their electric trucks, with the total fleet having covered more than 140 million km in customer operations worldwide.
Despite the progress, electric trucks only accounted for 1.3% of total sales in Europe in 2024. Alm stressed the need for infrastructure development to accelerate the shift to zero-emission transport, citing the requirement for 40,000 fast chargers along European roads to support a potential total of 400,000 electric trucks by 2030. He also called for more efficient economic policies to make electric truck operations profitable for all transport companies.
In September 2024, Volvo Trucks took a step towards sustainability by increasing the use of low CO2 emission steel in its trucks. This steel is made from recycled material and produced using fossil-free electricity and biogas, aligning with the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
As Volvo Trucks continues to lead the way in the electric truck market, their focus on innovation, sustainability, and efficiency positions them as a key player in the future of transportation. With a growing electric truck fleet and a dedication to reducing emissions, Volvo Trucks is shaping the industry towards a greener and more sustainable future.
