China recently celebrated a significant milestone in the electric vehicle industry, with the annual production of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) surpassing 10 million units for the first time. The ceremony, held in Wuhan, marked China as the first country to achieve this impressive feat, with Dongfeng’s Voyah Courage SUV being honored as the 10 millionth NEV produced.
According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), the journey to this milestone began in 2013 when China’s NEV production was first included in the statistical system, with a modest production of 18,000 vehicles. The industry saw steady growth over the years, reaching one million units in 2018, over 6.5 million units in 2022, and exceeding 9 million units in 2023 before reaching the historic 10 million mark in 2024. This progress highlights China’s commitment to sustainable transportation and technological advancement.
China has consistently led the global NEV market since 2015, with NEVs accounting for over 60% of the global market share by 2023. The country’s annual production and sales of NEVs have exceeded 9 million vehicles, solidifying its position as a key player in the electric vehicle industry. Additionally, China’s total automobile retail sales have increased significantly from 2.4 trillion yuan in 2012 to 4.86 trillion yuan in 2023, representing approximately 10% of the total retail sales of consumer goods.
The Voyah Courage, the 10 millionth NEV produced in China, is a mid-size SUV built on the ESSA intelligent electric architecture. With dimensions of 4725/1900/1636 mm (1653 mm with luggage rack) and a wheelbase of 2900 mm, the Courage offers both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive versions. The two-wheel drive model features a rear electric motor with a maximum power of 215 kW or 230 kW and a range of 625 km to 901 km, depending on the battery pack. The four-wheel drive version boasts a combined maximum power of 320 kW and a range of 570 km.
The celebration of China’s 10 millionth NEV production is a testament to the country’s dedication to sustainable mobility and innovation in the automotive industry. With continued advancements in technology and a growing market for electric vehicles, China is poised to remain a global leader in the NEV sector for years to come.
