The Unique Skills Required for a Road Tester
Upon reflection, the job of a road tester requires a particular set of skills that may not be easily transferable to other professions. It’s a role that demands a deep understanding of automotive performance and a keen eye for detail.
Personally, I’ve always felt that I wouldn’t thrive in the corporate culture of an automotive development engineer or the fast-paced world of motorsport. My lack of technical expertise and patience would likely hinder my success in those fields.
Even within the realm of media, road testers are often seen as living on a separate island, detached from the usual office environment. We navigate the roads and tracks, testing out a variety of vehicles in different settings, which sets us apart from our peers.
One alternative career path that intrigues me is that of a driving instructor. Not the usual beginner’s lessons, but rather advanced driving tuition on roads or tracks. My experience behind the wheel of diverse cars in various conditions could potentially prepare me for such a role.
Recently, I had the opportunity to test drive a pick-up truck on an off-road course during a press event. Paired with a seasoned rally driver, I was guided through the challenges with ease and expertise. We discussed cars, engines, and techniques, making the experience both educational and enjoyable.
It’s moments like these that make me appreciate the unique skills required for a road tester. The ability to adapt to different driving conditions, communicate effectively with co-drivers, and provide valuable feedback on vehicle performance are essential qualities for success in this role.
