Xiaomi EV’s phase 2 plant is currently in the midst of a massive hiring spree in order to gear up for mass production, as reported by local media outlet Sina Tech. The factory is actively seeking to fill various positions, including general workers, operators, and truck drivers, targeting individuals within the age range of 18-38.
Employees at the plant will be required to work in two shifts, with an 11-hour workday and a daily wage of RMB 230 ($32). This move comes in response to the overwhelming demand for the newly launched YU7, Xiaomi’s first electric SUV, which was officially unveiled on June 26. The YU7 quickly garnered 200,000 firm orders within just three minutes of sales commencement, and over 240,000 orders were locked in within 18 hours.
The unprecedented surge in orders has posed significant challenges for Xiaomi EV, resulting in factory capacity constraints. Customers who wish to purchase the YU7 now are facing a waiting period of 38-58 weeks for delivery, as per information available on Xiaomi EV’s mobile app.
At present, Xiaomi EV’s operational factory is the phase 1 project located in Yizhuang, southeast of Beijing, with an annual production capacity of 150,000 units. Since June 2024, the factory has adopted a two-shift production system to cope with the demand for its SU7 series.
In a bid to expedite production and meet customer requirements, Xiaomi has already started producing some YU7 SUV vehicles, allowing consumers to secure orders with delivery expected within 1-5 weeks. The company is also gearing up for the second phase of its factory project, with reports indicating that production is set to commence in July-August.
Furthermore, Xiaomi’s subsidiary recently acquired a new plot of land in Beijing, signaling plans for the third phase of the Xiaomi EV factory. This strategic move underscores Xiaomi’s commitment to scaling up its electric vehicle production capabilities and meeting the growing demand in the market.
The impressive performance of the YU7 in the Chinese EV market, with over 200,000 firm orders secured within the first 3 minutes, highlights Xiaomi’s strong foothold in the industry and its ability to capture consumer interest effectively. As Xiaomi continues to ramp up production and expand its manufacturing capacity, the company is poised to make further strides in the competitive electric vehicle landscape.
