Xiaomi EV, the car-making unit of tech giant Xiaomi, has issued its first-ever car recall after receiving multiple complaints related to the parking assistance software. The recall affects 30,931 SU7 Standard Edition electric vehicles manufactured between February 6, 2024, and November 26, 2024. The recall was prompted by reports of accidents caused by a software issue that affected the detection of static obstacles by the parking assistance function, leading to an increased risk of collisions.
The company will be providing a free OTA (over-the-air) software upgrade to rectify the safety hazard. Xiaomi EV explained that the glitch was caused by a software timing synchronization anomaly linked to occasional malfunctions in the cloud-based service. Following the incidents, Xiaomi EV took immediate action by implementing additional protection strategies and precautions via the cloud service to prevent future issues.
The decision to recall the vehicles was made after two months of thorough testing and validation, as well as consultations with regulatory authorities. Xiaomi EV, which officially entered the automotive industry in 2021 and launched the SU7 electric sedan in 2024, aims to deliver 300,000 vehicles in 2025. The company’s second EV model, YU7, is expected to be launched in mid-2025.
Goldman Sachs has projected that Xiaomi could sell 350,000 EVs in 2025 and 655,000 in 2026, indicating a positive outlook for the company’s electric vehicle segment. The recall serves as a proactive measure by Xiaomi EV to address safety concerns and ensure the continued reliability of its vehicles.
