Xpeng has officially launched the Max variants of its Mona M03 electric sedan, offering features similar to Tesla’s FSD (Full Self-Driving) for free on an affordable model. The Mona M03 has two variants, with starting prices of RMB 129,800 ($18,040) and RMB 139,800, offering CLTC ranges of 502 km and 600 km, respectively.
The pricing is significantly lower than the RMB 155,800 announced by Xpeng for the Max variant in August 2024. The company has not launched the Max variant with a CLTC range of 580 kilometers that was announced last year.
The Mona M03 Max integrates an advanced ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) system that leads its class, marking the first time such high-level driving features have been introduced to a vehicle in the $20,000 price range, said He Xiaopeng, chairman and CEO of Xpeng, at an event today. This configuration is typically only available in vehicles priced above RMB 200,000, challenging traditional perceptions of A-class vehicles and ushering in a new era of accessible advanced smart driving.
The M03 Max variants are equipped with Xpeng’s in-house developed Turing smart driving system, which provides advanced AI-assisted driving without additional fees or subscriptions, covering all public roads in China. The Max variants are equipped with two Nvidia Orin-X smart driving chips, offering 508 TOPS of computing power, which Xpeng said is four times that of comparable products.
The Mona M03 Max enables seamless human-machine co-pilot, allowing the vehicle and driver to intuitively share control without system separation during steering inputs. It also features intelligent parking capabilities, including parking in tight spaces and point-to-point assisted driving, without restrictions on routes or scenarios.
By comparison, the Tesla Model 3 currently starts at RMB 235,500 in China, with consumers needing to pay an additional RMB 64,000 to obtain the FSD software.
The Mona M03 Max is the first to feature Xpeng’s upgraded AI Tianji System 5.7.0, which adds over 300 new features compared to the Mona M03 released last year. The Mona M03 was initially launched on August 27, 2024, with three variants announced at the time: 515, 620, and 580 Max, with starting prices of RMB 119,800, RMB 129,800, and RMB 155,800, respectively. Deliveries for the two standard variants began on August 30. These variants do not include FSD-like smart driving features but offer capabilities such as adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assistance, and parking assistance.
Xpeng had originally planned to begin deliveries of the Max variant after the 2025 Chinese New Year break, but this schedule was postponed. Xpeng spent additional months optimizing the smart driving system and underlying electrical architecture for the Max variants, according to Mr. He.
Xpeng also unveiled two Plus variants of the Mona M03 at today’s event, with starting prices of RMB 119,800 and RMB 129,800, respectively. Their CLTC ranges are 515 kilometers and 620 kilometers, respectively. The Mona M03 has achieved success since its launch and has become Xpeng’s best-selling model.
The electric sedan delivered 14,210 units in April, accounting for 40.55 percent of Xpeng’s monthly deliveries. From January to April, the Mona M03 delivered 61,340 units, accounting for 47.53 percent of Xpeng’s deliveries during the same period. To date, the Mona M03 has accumulated over 120,000 deliveries, Xpeng announced today.
The launch of the new P7 in China is expected to be in July-August, targeting the RMB 300,000 ($41,600) market.
