Xpeng has officially named its upcoming SUV model as the Xpeng G7, which is set to be a strong contender in the RMB 250,000 ($34,100) class this year, according to a company executive.

The unveiling of the Xpeng G7 comes after spy shots surfaced showing the facelifted Tesla Model Y bearing a striking resemblance to Xpeng’s G6 SUV. The new model is expected to offer a blend of style, cutting-edge AI technology, and ample space, making it an appealing choice for families, as described by Xpeng’s vice president Yu Tao on Weibo.

While specific details about the Xpeng G7 are yet to be disclosed, Yu shared the first few images of the upcoming SUV, showcasing its sleek design and modern features.

Interestingly, the timing of Xpeng’s G7 reveal coincided with the circulation of images of the revamped Tesla Model Y without any camouflage on Chinese social media platforms. The similarities between the updated Model Y and Xpeng’s G6 have sparked discussions online, further elevating Xpeng’s presence in the market.

Xpeng’s current lineup includes the G6 and the flagship G9 SUV, with the G6 priced at RMB 199,900 and the G9 starting at RMB 263,900. The company’s strategic positioning of the G7 between these two models hints at a competitive pricing strategy to target a wider consumer base.

In the highly competitive electric SUV segment, the Xpeng G7 is expected to directly rival the Tesla Model Y, which offers three variants in China with varying price points. Additionally, Nio’s sub-brand Onvo is also gearing up to compete with its L60 SUV targeting the Model Y, priced at RMB 206,900, including the battery pack.
