Xpeng and Volkswagen Sign MOU for Superfast Charging Network in China
Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) and Volkswagen, one of the world’s largest automakers, have entered into a strategic collaboration to build one of the largest superfast charging networks in China. This partnership will see more than 20,000 charging piles operated by the two companies covering 420 cities in China, providing charging infrastructure for customers of both Xpeng and Volkswagen.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between Xpeng and Volkswagen Group China marks a significant step in the evolution of electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure in the world’s largest EV market. The collaboration aims to enhance the charging experience for customers and accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in China.
In addition to the deployment of charging infrastructure, the partnership between Xpeng and Volkswagen will explore the possibility of establishing co-branded superfast charging stations in China. This initiative is expected to further expand the charging network and improve operational efficiency for both companies.
This strategic cooperation represents the fourth milestone in the long-term partnership between Xpeng and Volkswagen. The two companies have been working together on various initiatives since Volkswagen announced a $700 million investment in Xpeng in July 2023. This initial investment paved the way for the co-development of two Volkswagen-branded EV models for the Chinese market, set to be launched in 2026.
Subsequent collaborations between Xpeng and Volkswagen have focused on joint sourcing programs for common components, as well as technical cooperation in Electrical/Electronic architecture development. These efforts have aimed to leverage each company’s strengths and drive innovation in the EV space.
Xpeng has been actively expanding its own supercharging network in China, with over 1,790 charging stations and 9,070 charging piles across 420 cities as of December 2024. The company has introduced advanced superchargers like the S4 and S5, offering peak charging powers of up to 800 kW and range enhancements of over 300 kilometers in just five minutes of charging.
Volkswagen, through its subsidiary CAMS New Energy Technology (CAMS), has also been building a robust charging network in China. With plans to deploy 17,000 fast-charging terminals by 2025, CAMS aims to cover most cities in China and provide convenient charging solutions for EV drivers.
The collaboration between Xpeng and Volkswagen in the superfast charging network underscores their commitment to advancing sustainable mobility and driving the transition to electric vehicles. By combining their expertise and resources, the two companies are poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of mobility in China and beyond.
