Yugo Is Back. Here’s What Its First Concept Looks Like

Yugo, the iconic automotive brand from the 1980s and 1990s, made headlines earlier this year with the announcement of its official comeback. The company revealed its plans to produce a small hatchback reminiscent of its classic models, sparking excitement among car enthusiasts. While initial teasers only offered a glimpse of the vehicle’s silhouette, we now have a more detailed look at Yugo’s new car, albeit in scale model form.

Unveiled at the prestigious Car Design Event 2025 in Munich, Yugo showcased its first scale-model concept designed by Serbian designer Darko Marčeta under the guidance of the brand’s new owner, Professor Dr. Aleksandar Bjelić. The concept, although unnamed, exudes a charming appeal with its compact two-door hatchback design, paying homage to the original Yugo models while incorporating modern styling cues expected from a 2025 vehicle.

Yugo emphasized that the new concept not only serves as a nod to its rich history but also highlights the affordability and sportiness of the upcoming model. The company aims to launch the production version of the hatchback within the next two years, targeting the competitive subcompact hatchback market in Europe. Potential rivals for the new Yugo include popular models like the Citroen C3, Renault Clio, and Volkswagen Polo.

In terms of powertrain options, Yugo plans to offer both naturally aspirated gas and turbocharged versions of the hatchback, with the possibility of an electric variant in the future. Customers can choose between automatic and manual transmissions, with a performance-oriented version also hinted by the company. While a fully functional prototype is still in the works, Yugo anticipates unveiling it at the Belgrade Expo in 2027, with production scheduled to commence the same year.

Although Yugo’s return marks a significant milestone for the brand, it’s unlikely that we’ll see the hatchback make its way back to American shores. Nonetheless, the revival of Yugo brings a fresh perspective to the automotive industry, blending nostalgia with contemporary design and technology. Stay tuned for more updates on Yugo’s journey back into the spotlight.
