The Future of VW’s Electric SUV Lineup

Volkswagen is gearing up to introduce its latest electric SUV, known internally as the ‘electric Tiguan’. This new model is set to position itself alongside the Tiguan, hinting at a familial connection between the two similarly sized SUVs.

While the company has not officially confirmed the name change for the electric model, VW’s Schäfer has hinted at the idea of retaining traditional names like Tiguan even as the brand transitions to an all-electric lineup. He believes in the value of iconic names that have been integral to Volkswagen’s success over the years.

However, not all models will make the cut in Volkswagen’s electric transition. The ID 5, a sportier coupé-styled variant of the ID 4, is set to be retired from the lineup in 2027. The decision comes as part of Volkswagen’s strategy to streamline its portfolio and focus on high-volume models, with the ID 4 taking precedence over its less popular sibling.

The Electric Golf Arrives in 2028

Looking ahead to 2028, Volkswagen is preparing for a significant milestone with the launch of the fully electrified electric Golf. This iconic model, currently in development at VW’s Braunschweig R&D center in Germany, will be the first UK model based on the new Scalable Systems Platform (SSP).

The electric Golf will feature an 800V electrical architecture, advanced battery technology, faster charging capabilities, and enhanced software functions. This marks a significant technological leap forward from Volkswagen’s current MEB-based models, offering increased flexibility and upgradability for customers.

VW’s Grünitz emphasizes the benefits of the new architecture, highlighting its flexibility and ability to introduce new features through over-the-air updates. This approach ensures that customers can enjoy the latest advancements in technology even after purchasing the vehicle, without the need for frequent service visits.
