BYD Australia may soon introduce the new Atto 2 in Australia, which could potentially be called the ‘Atto 3 Up’. The Chinese carmaker’s all-new small electric SUV is currently on sale in Europe, and it has the potential to disrupt the market dominated by brands like Renault, Toyota, and Hyundai.
The Atto 2 is designed for the small SUV segment, which is one of the fastest-growing car segments globally. It appeals to growing families for its spacious cabin and boot space, as well as its rugged appearance. Older down-sizers appreciate the higher seating position and compact exterior dimensions of the Atto 2.
Measuring 4.3 meters in length and 1.8 meters in width, the Atto 2 is compact and easy to maneuver in urban areas. Despite its size, it offers a roomy interior and practical boot space. However, it is an all-electric model, with no hybrid or plug-in hybrid options available. The initial versions come with a 42.4kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery, offering a range of 312km according to the WLTP test.
A longer-range model, the Comfort version, will be available in Europe with a larger battery and a range of up to 435km. The Atto 2 is expected to eventually go on sale in Australia, potentially challenging hybrid-powered competitors in its class.
The interior of the Atto 2 is a standout feature, offering a sophisticated and upmarket feel compared to rivals in its price range. The cabin features vegan leather trim, comfortable high-backed bucket seats, a four-spoke steering wheel, and a digital instrument panel. The central touchscreen comes in two sizes and offers various entertainment and mobile work features.
In terms of performance, the Atto 2 is equipped with a 130kW electric motor delivering 290Nm of torque. It offers a balanced power delivery, achieving a 0-100km/h time of 7.9 seconds. The efficiency of the vehicle is rated at 16kWh/100km on the WLTP cycle.
Charging the Atto 2 may be a concern, with a DC charge rate of 65kW, requiring 37 minutes to go from 10-80% battery charge. However, the lithium-iron phosphate battery is known for its long-term durability and less degrading compared to lithium-ion batteries.
Standard safety features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring. The Atto 2 has not yet been tested by ANCAP, but related models have performed well in crash tests.
In terms of running costs, the Atto 2 is cost-effective to run as long as it can be charged at home with a competitive electricity tariff. The vehicle comes with a six-year warranty and 150,000km coverage.
The Atto 2 is an impressive offering from BYD, with a high-quality interior and competent performance. While it may not be the most entertaining to drive, it excels in urban environments and offers a refined driving experience. The upcoming longer-range model may expand its appeal in the Australian market, posing a threat to traditional manufacturers.
