2025 Deepal S05 review: Quick drive

Australia is set to welcome another fully electric compact SUV from China, this time from the Deepal brand. The Deepal S05 is scheduled to arrive in the second half of 2025, adding to the brand’s lineup alongside the larger S07 mid-sized SUV and the upcoming E07 SUV/ute.

Competing directly with established models like the BYD Atto 3 and Chery Omoda E5, the Deepal S05 brings a modern exterior design measuring 4620mm long, 1900mm wide, and 1600mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2880mm. Features like frameless doors and hidden door handles enhance its contemporary aesthetic.

During a brief drive in China, initial impressions of the S05 were positive. With a seven-year/160,000km warranty and distribution by a company with a strong track record like Inchcape, there is a level of trust in the product’s long-term viability. However, the competitive market means the S05 needs to excel to stand out among its rivals.

The interior of the Deepal S05 boasts a 15.4-inch central control screen powered by the Qualcomm SA8155P chip and running Deepal OS 3.0. Unlike some competitors, the S05 offers a useful head-up display (HUD) and a range of interior trim color options, including a striking baby blue option.

The quality of the interior is top-notch, with well-crafted materials and a comfortable seating arrangement. Visibility is excellent, and there is ample space for both front and rear passengers. The fit and finish of the S05 are impressive, rivaling luxury European brands in terms of build quality.

Under the bonnet, the Deepal S05 offers two powertrain options in other markets. The battery-electric variant features a rear-mounted electric motor delivering 175kW of power and 320Nm of torque, with a 56.12kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery providing up to 510km of range. There is also a range-extender electric vehicle (EREV) option available in other markets.

While safety data for the S05 is not yet available, Deepal’s track record with the S07 suggests a high standard of safety features. The brand’s quick response to customer feedback and continuous updates to improve the product inspire confidence in the S05’s potential success in the Australian market.

Overall, the Deepal S05 shows promise as a competitive option in the electric compact SUV segment, with a focus on quality, technology, and customer satisfaction. If priced competitively against its rivals, the S05 could carve out a niche for itself in Australia’s increasingly crowded market.
