400 kW charging On The Run arrives in Canada – and it’s FREE!

British Columbia recently welcomed its first 400 kW DC fast charger at Canadian convenience store chain On The Run. What makes this even more exciting is that, for a limited time, these chargers are completely free to use!

On The Run unveiled their new ABB-developed 400 kW chargers earlier this month, with plans to expand to at least four more locations in BC by the spring. The goal is to have these ultra-fast chargers up and running just in time for the summer road trip season, providing a convenient and efficient charging solution for electric vehicle owners.

The ABB A400 chargers offer an enhanced customer experience, boasting features such as a 32-inch screen, higher power charging sessions, and power sharing capabilities. To access the free charging, customers simply need to download the Journie Rewards app and start the charge.

These 400 kW DC fast chargers are compatible with CCS and CHAdeMO plugs, making them suitable for a wide range of electric vehicles. Tesla drivers can also use these chargers with an adapter, although they may be limited to a maximum charging speed of 50 kW. Despite this limitation, On The Run is committed to providing a reliable and convenient charging experience for all EV owners.

In addition to the 400 kW ABB A400 units, On The Run locations also feature the ABB Terra 184 dispensers rated at 180 kW. Plans are in place to deploy similar charging stations at four locations in BC, as well as two locations each in Quebec and Ontario by the end of the year.

While Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk may have once criticized 350 kW charging speeds as inadequate, the reality is that companies like BP Pulse, Revel, and Wallbox are already deploying 400 kW charging solutions. This puts Tesla at a disadvantage, as their Superchargers currently max out at around 325 kW.

Overall, the introduction of these 400 kW chargers at On The Run locations signals a major step forward in the EV charging infrastructure in British Columbia. With more high-speed charging options becoming available, electric vehicle owners can look forward to faster and more convenient charging experiences on their road trips.
