GBS: The Unique Low-Volume Maker

Located in Ollerton, GBS stands out among low-volume car manufacturers for its commitment to in-house production rather than outsourcing components. Unlike companies like Caterham and Ariel, GBS estimates that 80% of the Zero model is built internally, including the fabrication of the chassis.

Upon touring the factory, it becomes evident that GBS is fundamentally an engineering company. They manufacture various components such as throttle bodies, radiators, brake discs and calipers, and dampers under the ATR brand name.

Renowned Mazda MX-5 tuner, BBR GTi, utilizes ATR’s throttle bodies, showcasing the quality and versatility of GBS’s products. Additionally, high-end restomodders have leveraged GBS’s composite design expertise in their projects.

The Zero model follows the typical 7-esque design, featuring a fabricated steel chassis that is spacious and accommodating. GBS offers a wider-chassis option, although most customers may not find it necessary due to the already generous seat and footwell dimensions, surpassing those of a Caterham.

The aluminium bodywork is bonded to the panels, providing a significant increase in rigidity according to GBS director, Richard Hall. With an overall weight of around 600kg distributed evenly front to rear, the Zero boasts impressive handling capabilities.

Customers have the choice between self-build and factory build options, with kit forms allowing for easier export and local assembly. While fully built cars are not sold in certain regions like the USA, GBS provides kits for assembly in those markets. In the UK, the starting price for a fully factory built Zero is £41,860 on the road, equipped with a 2.5-litre Duratec engine producing 210bhp and 196lb ft of torque.
