Horizon Robotics and Nio have come together to introduce the Firefly, which is the first model to emerge from their partnership. This collaboration marks a significant milestone as Nio-branded models will now transition to using the in-house Shenji chip, while the Onvo L60 will utilize the Nvidia Orin X chip.
The Firefly is equipped with Horizon Robotics’ Journey series of computing solutions, offering a dynamic driving experience to users. Horizon Robotics has emphasized that Firefly vehicles provide best-in-class handling and an intelligent driving experience, making it an ideal choice for urban exploration.
Yu Kai, the CEO of Horizon Robotics, had announced back in November 2022 about the partnership with Nio for the development of chips for one of the EV maker’s new brands. Prior to the release of the ET9, Nio-branded models were equipped with four Nvidia Drive Orin smart driving chips. However, the ET9 now features Nio’s in-house Shenji NX9031 chips, known for their high computing power.
Nio is planning to update its main-selling models, including the ET5, ET5 Touring, ES6, and EC6, with the switch from Orin to Shenji NX9031 chips. Meanwhile, Nio’s sub-brand, Onvo, has launched its first model, the L60 mid-size SUV, which is powered by the Nvidia Orin X chip. The upcoming L90 model from Onvo, set to be revealed at the Shanghai auto show, may or may not use Nvidia chips.
One of the key factors contributing to the competitive pricing of the Firefly model is the use of Horizon Robotics’ chips. The Firefly was initially available for pre-sales on Nio Day 2024 at a price of RMB 148,800 yuan ($20,370), with the official launch scheduled for tomorrow at a likely lower price.
In addition to Nio, Horizon Robotics also supplies chips to Li Auto for its AD Pro driver-assistance system-equipped vehicles. Li Auto’s pricier models use the AD Max driver-assistance system with two Nvidia Orin X chips. Li Auto plans to upgrade the chips in its upcoming facelift models to the J6M chip from Horizon Robotics.
Overall, the collaboration between Horizon Robotics and Nio has paved the way for innovative and cost-effective solutions in the EV industry. With the Firefly leading the charge as the first model of Nio’s third brand, consumers can expect a seamless blend of cutting-edge technology and exceptional performance.
