Renault Considering Electric MPV to Rival Volkswagen ID Buzz

Renault is exploring the possibility of introducing an electric MPV to compete with the Volkswagen ID Buzz, with inspiration drawn from the innovative seating arrangement of the Mk1 Espace.

During the unveiling of the new Trafic E-Tech electric van at The Commercial Vehicle show in Birmingham, Renault van design chief Yannick Bignon revealed that a passenger-carrying version is being considered. Bignon stated, “Today, it’s under study. We have not yet confirmed it, but it’s under study.”

When asked about the potential for unique seating configurations similar to the swivelling ‘captain’s chairs’ from the Espace, Bignon expressed that the team is exploring various possibilities. He mentioned, “Everything that you say will be the way that we are working on.”

While Bignon acknowledged that it is too early to delve into specifics about a Trafic E-Tech passenger variant, he hinted that more information may be revealed at a later stage if the project progresses.

An MPV model is just one of over 35 different iterations of the Trafic, Goelette, and Estafette that have been proposed to Renault Group CEO Luca de Meo. Other ideas include a camper van and a food truck.

Senior vice-president of Renault’s van division, Heinz-Jürgen Löw, also expressed interest in the concept of an electric MPV, stating that it “could be a good idea – not yet, but of course we’re looking.” Löw highlighted the adaptability of the skateboard-style platform, emphasizing the van’s exceptional maneuverability comparable to a Renault Clio supermini.

With a focus on scalability and versatility, Renault is exploring the potential to leverage the van’s design for a broader range of vehicles, including a passenger-centric electric MPV. The innovative approach to seating arrangements and the flexibility of the platform could pave the way for a new era of electric mobility offerings from Renault.
