China’s first automotive LiDAR standard

The automotive industry in China has achieved a significant milestone with the introduction of the GB/T 45500-2025 standard, titled “Performance Requirements and Test Methods for Automotive LiDAR”. This groundbreaking initiative was spearheaded by Hesai Group, a leading provider of LiDAR technology for vehicles and robotics, in collaboration with more than 50 LiDAR manufacturers and car makers over a period of three years.

The primary objective of this standard is to establish uniform testing protocols and performance criteria for automotive LiDAR systems. These criteria encompass aspects such as range accuracy, angular resolution, resistance to interference, and durability in various environmental conditions. By setting these benchmarks, the standard aims to facilitate the safe integration of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicles on the road.

Notably, Hesai Group had previously initiated a LiDAR safety and performance standard in September 2024, which was subsequently adopted by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in the United States. Developed in collaboration with industry giants like Intel, Bosch, and Continental, this standard addresses key areas such as functional safety, cybersecurity, and electromechanical integrity for LiDAR systems.

In April of this year, Hesai Group unveiled its latest LiDAR solution, Infinity Eye, designed to cater to autonomous driving systems ranging from Level two (L2) to Level four (L4) autonomy. The company also introduced three new automotive-grade LiDAR products: the ETX ultra-long-range LiDAR, AT1440 ultra-high-definition LiDAR, and FTX fully solid-state blind spot LiDAR.

Furthermore, Hesai has been selected to supply its AT128 long-range automotive LiDAR for the first production-ready Level four (L4) Robotaxi. This innovative vehicle, a joint venture between Didi Autonomous Driving and GAC Aion New Energy Automobile, is slated for mass production later this year, with initial deployments expected to commence in 2026.

David Li, co-founder and CEO of Hesai, expressed his enthusiasm about the collaboration with Didi Autonomous Driving and GAC Aion, emphasizing the synergistic relationship between advanced LiDAR technology and autonomous driving systems. This partnership exemplifies the transformative potential of cutting-edge LiDAR innovation in revolutionizing the future of mobility.

As the automotive industry continues to embrace LiDAR technology for enhanced safety and autonomy, initiatives like the GB/T 45500-2025 standard and innovative solutions like Infinity Eye are paving the way for a new era of intelligent transportation systems. With a focus on performance, reliability, and collaboration, Hesai Group is driving the evolution of LiDAR technology towards a safer and more efficient future on the roads.
