BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) has introduced its popular Seagull compact electric vehicle (EV) to the European market, now known as the Dolphin Surf. This move marks the company’s expansion into key overseas markets with its best-selling model.
The Dolphin Surf is BYD’s 10th model in Europe and is now available for purchase in 15 European countries. This electric vehicle comes in three different price points, ranging from 22,990 euros ($26,000) to 24,990 euros, offering varying ranges of 322 kilometers to 507 kilometers. Customers who buy the Dolphin Surf before the end of June can take advantage of discounted prices ranging from 19,990 to 24,990 euros for these three versions.
Originally launched in China in April 2023, the Seagull is BYD’s most affordable model. In August 2024, the 2025 Seagull was released in China, followed by the Seagull Smart Driving Edition in February 2025, with prices starting at RMB 69,800 ($9,690) to RMB 85,800.
In April, the Seagull became BYD’s top-selling model, with sales of 55,028 units contributing 14.48 percent of BYD Group’s monthly sales. The Song family of models, including the Dynasty and Ocean series, also performed well, with combined sales surpassing those of the Seagull.
Throughout January to April, the Seagull sold 172,995 units, a 57.98 percent increase year-on-year, making up 12.53 percent of BYD Group’s total sales during that period. Additionally, the Seagull exported 8,745 units in April, bringing the total exports to 28,206 units.
BYD plans to expand its presence in Europe by entering 12 new markets this year, with over 1,000 points of sale. Maria Grazia Davino, BYD’s regional managing director for markets including Germany, announced the opening of the company’s European headquarters and a new research and development center in Budapest, Hungary, further solidifying its commitment to the European market.
With BYD’s continued success and expansion into new markets, the Dolphin Surf is poised to make a significant impact in the European electric vehicle market. ($1 = 0.8800 euros, $1 = RMB 7.2025)
