Peugeot is set to make a big splash in the automotive world with the unveiling of a hot GTi variant of the electric e-208 supermini. The highly anticipated reveal will take place on the eve of the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hour race next month.

The French automaker has kept details of the new model under wraps, but has promised that it will be “fun to drive, agile, powerful – built to deliver an unforgettable driving experience.” This new GTi variant will mark Peugeot’s return to the performance segment, following the discontinuation of the previous-generation Peugeot 308 in 2021. Notably, this will also be Peugeot’s first sporty pure-electric car, signaling a shift towards electrification in its performance lineup.

In a recent media briefing, Peugeot CEO Alain Favey expressed his excitement about reintroducing the GTi badge on the e-208. He emphasized the importance of honoring the brand’s heritage and connecting its road cars to its motorsport endeavors, such as the World Endurance Championship where Peugeot competes with the 9X8 hypercar.

Favey hinted at the possibility of expanding the GTi lineup in the future, depending on customer feedback. While the focus is currently on the e-208 GTi, he acknowledged that there could be other GTi executions in the pipeline based on market demand.

The decision to bring back the iconic GTi badge was one of Favey’s priorities since assuming the role of Peugeot CEO earlier this year. He sees it as a way to uphold the brand’s reputation for delivering exceptional driving experiences and capturing the essence of Peugeot’s performance heritage.
