Voltpost just flipped the switch on its first public lamppost EV charger

Voltpost, a groundbreaking startup that specializes in transforming existing lampposts into electric vehicle (EV) chargers, has officially unveiled its first public charging station in Oak Park, Illinois. This innovative curbside charger, a result of collaboration between Voltpost, the Park District of Oak Park, and utility company ComEd, aims to provide convenient and affordable EV charging options right within the neighborhood.

Rather than constructing brand new charging stations from scratch, Voltpost’s approach involves retrofitting existing lampposts with a modular Level 2 charging platform. This method not only minimizes construction time and costs but also allows for rapid deployment – Voltpost states that its EV charger can be installed on a lamppost within minutes. Controlled through a user-friendly mobile app, this charging solution is designed for public spaces like curbs and parking lots, as well as private locations such as university campuses and apartment complexes.

CEO and co-founder of Voltpost, Jeffrey Prosserman, expressed his enthusiasm for the launch in Oak Park, emphasizing the company’s dedication to expanding EV charging accessibility and promoting sustainable transportation practices. This initiative in Illinois follows Voltpost’s successful projects in New York and Michigan, marking a significant step towards nationwide scalability.

Voltpost’s sustainability-driven and equitable approach involves utilizing existing infrastructure, like lampposts, to create charging stations, rather than starting from scratch. This strategy not only reduces environmental impact but also extends EV charging accessibility to individuals without private driveways or garages.

Kassie Porreca, president of the Park District Board of Commissioners, highlighted the importance of providing Oak Park residents with affordable access to EV charging infrastructure, aligning with the community’s needs and sustainability goals. Similarly, Najwa Abouhassan, senior manager at ComEd and a representative of the 2c2i climate tech initiative, praised the project for its innovative blend of technology and community impact.

With the successful launch of its first public charging site in Oak Park, Voltpost is now setting its sights on expanding its presence across the country, transforming streetlights into smart charging hubs for EV drivers nationwide.

In a previous collaboration with the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) Studio program, Voltpost demonstrated the effectiveness of its charging solution by installing chargers on lampposts at Newlab in Brooklyn and a DOT parking lot. The rapid installation process, high uptime, and positive feedback from EV drivers showcased the potential of Voltpost’s technology.

As Voltpost continues to revolutionize the EV charging landscape, the company’s commitment to sustainable and community-focused solutions remains at the forefront of its mission. This innovative approach not only accelerates the adoption of electric vehicles but also contributes to a greener and more accessible transportation ecosystem.
