Leaked recording proves Tesla (TSLA) has employee morale problem

A leaked recording of a new Tesla training program has shed light on the company’s efforts to address growing employee morale issues. Last year, Tesla faced significant challenges in this area following a poorly handled mass wave of layoffs. A recent week-long production shutdown at Gigafactory Texas provided an opportunity for employees to participate in training sessions, including one focused on company culture.

Business Insider obtained a recording from the training session, where the instructor addressed concerns about turnover due to morale issues. Employees were asked if they had ever felt overwhelmed by working conditions or constant changes within the company. The instructor acknowledged that many people leave Tesla with a negative experience, feeling burnt out and unheard.

While company culture training was previously reserved for Tesla management, it has now been expanded to include all employees. The instructor emphasized the importance of employees embodying Tesla’s “higher purpose” and being a reflection of the company’s culture. Tesla has long been known for its mission-driven approach to accelerating the transition to electric transport and sustainable energy. However, recent shifts in focus towards autonomous driving and controversies surrounding CEO Elon Musk’s political affiliations have raised concerns among employees.

It is widely believed that company culture starts at the top, and Musk’s leadership style and actions have come under scrutiny. His absence from day-to-day operations at Tesla in recent months, coupled with controversies surrounding his political views, has led to a decline in favorability among both customers and employees. Talent retention has become a major concern at Tesla, with a noticeable exodus of talent due in part to morale issues.

As Tesla continues to navigate these challenges, it is essential for the company to prioritize employee well-being and address underlying issues that may be contributing to low morale. By fostering a positive and supportive work environment, Tesla can ensure the continued success and growth of its workforce.
