Hyundai Mobis Introduces Advanced Rear Safety Control Technology

Hyundai Mobis has unveiled a cutting-edge rear safety control technology aimed at preventing rear-end collisions during highway driving, a significant advancement in autonomous driving safety.

The new system, announced on June 11, combines rear-side radars, front-facing cameras, and various sensors to detect vehicles approaching from behind. When integrated with the Smart Cruise Control (SCC) function, the system actively monitors the surrounding environment. If a trailing vehicle comes within 10 meters, the driver is alerted through audible beeps or visual warnings on the dashboard cluster. If the threat persists, the vehicle autonomously accelerates to create a safe distance from the vehicle behind, thereby avoiding a potential collision.

Unlike existing systems from other automakers that only provide warnings and pre-tighten seatbelts, Hyundai Mobis’s technology enables vehicles to take proactive, autonomous action to ensure safety.

Chung Soo-kyung, executive vice president and head of the Electronics Business Unit at Hyundai Mobis, stated, “This technology enhances our competitive edge by allowing vehicles not only to warn but also to independently respond to rear-end risks. Our goal is to offer intelligent solutions that address both front and rear threats on the road.”

The technology, which previously won the grand prize at the 2022 Hyundai Motor Group Idea Contest, underscores Hyundai Mobis’s ongoing dedication to advancing autonomous safety capabilities. In addition to the acceleration function, the company is working on a lane-change feature that would enable vehicles to automatically change lanes to avoid persistent threats from vehicles behind.

Hyundai Mobis’s innovative rear safety control technology represents a significant step forward in autonomous driving safety, showcasing the company’s commitment to developing smart solutions for a safer driving experience.
