Volkswagen’s highly anticipated entry-level EV, the ID.2, has been spotted out in public for testing, giving enthusiasts a closer look at the production model. The latest photos reveal some new design features of the upcoming electric vehicle, which is based on the MEB+ platform and expected to hit the market in 2026.

While the prototype is camouflaged in Polo body panels, it still bears a striking resemblance to the concept showcased in 2023. The ID.2 is slated to start at under 25,000 euros in Europe, with a possible price drop to £20,000 in the UK. It will be available with either a 38 kWh or 56 kWh battery pack, offering a range of up to 280 miles on a single charge.

Volkswagen is drawing inspiration from its classic models like the Golf, Polo, and Beetle for the design elements of the ID.2. The interior of the electric vehicle features a 12.9″ infotainment screen and a 10.9″ driver display, with a mix of physical buttons for user convenience. One interesting feature is the different drive modes that transform the driver cluster to resemble iconic Volkswagen models.

Following the launch of the ID.2, Volkswagen plans to introduce an SUV version and an even smaller, more affordable ID.1 by 2027. SEAT S.A., which leads VW’s Electric Urban Car Family project, recently announced the production of the first body parts for the new CUPRA Raval, followed by the Volkswagen ID.2. The assembly of pre-series battery systems has also commenced at the Group’s Martorell plant in Spain.

With the ID.2 set to revolutionize the entry-level EV market, Volkswagen is gearing up for a significant overhaul of its electric vehicle lineup. The new model promises “huge improvements” and is expected to be a game-changer in the affordable electric vehicle segment. Stay tuned for more updates on the Volkswagen ID.2 as it progresses towards its official launch.
