2025 GAC GS8 review | CarExpert

GAC, short for Guangzhou Automobile Group, is one of the Chinese brands gearing up to make a mark in the Australian automotive market. Among their lineup, the GAC GS8 large SUV stands out as a potential competitor to popular models like the Toyota Kluger, Hyundai Palisade, and Nissan Pathfinder.

Measuring 4980mm long, 1950mm wide, and 1780mm tall, the GAC GS8 boasts distinctive exterior styling reminiscent of a shrunken Cadillac Escalade. Despite its size and weight (2030kg for the 4WD model), the GS8 is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 182kW and 400Nm of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Equipped with Sand, Mud, and Snow drive modes, the GS8 offers some all-terrain capabilities, although its road-biased tires and 20-inch rims suggest a focus on urban driving. The interior of the GS8 is loaded with modern features like a 14.6-inch infotainment system, a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster, and a head-up display. However, the interior trims may feel cheap compared to its competitors.

In terms of pricing, the entry-level GS8 starts at AED149,900 (A$66,725) in the UAE, while the top-spec 4WD GX variant is priced at AED169,900 (A$75,627). If these prices are reflective of the Australian market, the GS8 would compete with established players in the segment.

While the GS8 may fall short in terms of powertrain and interior quality, it excels in ride and handling dynamics. Supported by GAC’s GPMA-L modular platform, the GS8 offers a comfortable and refined driving experience. The SUV’s safety features include dual front, side, and curtain airbags, along with various driver assistance systems.

Overall, the GAC GS8 presents a compelling option in the large SUV segment, with the potential to establish GAC as a mainstream brand in Australia. With some improvements in interior materials and powertrain performance, the GS8 could become a well-rounded family SUV that appeals to a wide range of buyers.
