Toyota’s $15,000 EV in China costs nearly $50K overseas

Toyota has launched its most affordable electric vehicle, the bZ3X, in China at a starting price of $15,000. However, the same model is now being introduced in overseas markets at a much higher price point of almost $50,000. The budget-friendly electric SUV has quickly gained popularity in China, becoming the best-selling foreign-owned EV in the country last month.

The bZ3X is the first 100,000 yuan-level pure electric SUV by Toyota, targeted towards younger families. It offers a range of around 249 miles and has been well-received in China. However, in countries like Ethiopia, where the vehicle is now available, the retail price is approximately $48,000 due to high import taxes and other costs associated with electric vehicles.

In China, the bZ3X comes with two battery options – 50.03 kWh and 67.92 kWh, offering driving ranges of 267 miles and 379 miles respectively. Buyers can choose between smart and non-smart driving models, starting at $15,000 and $20,500 respectively. The interior of the bZ3X features advanced technology, including Momenta’s 5.0 smart driving system, and offers class-leading rear space with all seats folded.

The popularity of the bZ3X was evident when GAC Toyota opened orders in China, with the server crashing as orders surpassed 10,000 in under an hour. However, the high price tag of almost $50,000 in overseas markets may deter potential buyers. In comparison, for the same price, buyers could opt for other affordable electric SUVs like Hyundai’s new three-row IONIQ 9.

Despite its success in China, the bZ3X’s overseas pricing may pose a challenge in attracting buyers. The question remains whether consumers in the US or Europe would be willing to pay double the price for Toyota’s electric SUV. Let us know your thoughts on the bZ3X in the comments below.
