You Can Now Dim the Side Windows in Toyota’s Most Luxurious SUV

Toyota has introduced a groundbreaking feature on its Century SUV that has car tint companies feeling a bit uneasy. The luxury SUV now comes equipped with dimming side windows for the rear occupants, a feature usually reserved for sunroofs rather than doors. This innovative technology allows the glass opacity to be adjusted, providing an extra level of privacy for passengers.

The technology behind this feature, known as the Digital Curtain, involves placing a film between two transparent laminated glass panels. Developed by Tokyo-based AGC, this technology allows for instant switching between three levels of transparency by applying a voltage to the film. The material used in the film blocks up to 99% of UV rays and is invisible to the eye.

While this technology may seem new, it is actually based on suspended particle devices (SPD), which have been used in electrochromic glass since 2005. The glass becomes transparent when an electrical current is applied and remains opaque when powered off. This technology has been gradually making its way into mainstream cars, with Toyota now incorporating it into the Century SUV’s side windows.

The Century SUV is not your average luxury vehicle. Each vehicle undergoes a meticulous three and a half-hour inspection, with final checks conducted by a master inspector. With a starting price of 27,000,000 yen ($182,500) before options, this SUV is definitely a luxury investment. Toyota also offers a wide range of options for customization, including lace seat covers reminiscent of the classic Century sedan.

In addition to the dimming side windows, Toyota has hinted at future enhancements for the Century SUV, including a minivan-style sliding rear door and a high-performance Gazoo Racing variant. While these features are currently limited to concept vehicles, there is potential for them to reach customers in the future.

The Century SUV is currently available in Japan and China, with the possibility of expanding to other markets in the future. With its innovative technology and luxurious features, the Century SUV sets a new standard for luxury vehicles in the automotive industry.
