Volkswagen Multivan and California gain four-wheel drive PHEV

New Four-Wheel Drive Plug-In-Hybrid Powertrain for Volkswagen Multivan and California

The Volkswagen Multivan and its camper van counterpart, the California, have recently been equipped with a new four-wheel drive plug-in-hybrid powertrain. This innovative system is now available in both models, offering enhanced performance and efficiency for drivers.

With a starting price of £54,525 for the Multivan and £71,295 for the California, this new powertrain features a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, a six-speed automatic gearbox, and two electric motors (one per axle). Together, they deliver an impressive 242bhp, allowing the van to accelerate from 0-62mph in just 9.0 seconds.

One of the key advantages of this new system is its electric-only range, which can reach up to 59 miles depending on the specific model chosen. The California, however, may have a slightly lower range due to its additional weight. The powertrain is supported by a 19.7kWh lithium-ion battery, which can be charged at up to 50kW on a DC connection or 11kW on AC.

Volkswagen has designed the plug-in-hybrid system to prioritize electric power whenever possible. The front motor takes precedence over the rear motor and petrol engine, with the engine primarily serving to generate electricity or provide additional power when needed. Additionally, the rear motor is disengaged from the powertrain at speeds above 81mph to optimize energy efficiency.

This new four-wheel-drive powertrain replaces the previous 1.4-litre PHEV option in the Multivan, offering drivers a more advanced and capable driving experience. Volkswagen’s commitment to innovation and sustainability is evident in the development of this new powertrain, which aims to enhance both performance and efficiency for drivers of the Multivan and California.
