WeRide, a leading autonomous technology company, has recently obtained the first and only permit to road test autonomous logistics vehicles in Huangpu, Guangzhou. This permit was granted for their Robovan W5, showcasing the company’s commitment to advancing autonomous delivery solutions.

The Robovan W5 has already received approval for road testing in Guangzhou’s Nansha District earlier this year. This latest permit in Huangpu District signifies WeRide’s progress towards commercializing autonomous delivery solutions on a larger scale.

In a strategic move to support the development of intelligent connected and new energy vehicles, Guangzhou Development District and Huangpu District introduced a policy framework on June 6. This framework aims to facilitate the deployment of autonomous technologies in various sectors, including ride-hailing, sanitation, and smart logistics. WeRide’s approval for full-area testing of the Robovan W5 in Huangpu District came shortly after the introduction of this framework.

Designed specifically for high-frequency urban logistics, the Robovan W5 offers a generous cargo volume of 5.5m³, a maximum payload capacity of 1,000kg, and a driving range of up to 220km. Its modular cargo compartments can be configured to suit different use cases, such as express delivery, neighborhood drop-offs, and personalized point-to-point logistics, making it a versatile solution for urban deliveries.

Equipped with Level-4 autonomous driving technology and WeRide’s redundant sensor suite, the W5 prioritizes safety and reliability. Additional features include a redundant drive-by-wire chassis, emergency braking and collision warning systems, real-time driving status monitoring, and a cloud-based control platform. These features ensure that each delivery is carried out with robust safety measures in place.

In other news, nominations are now open for the prestigious Just Auto Excellence Awards. This renowned programme celebrates innovation, leadership, and impact within the automotive industry.
