BYD Takes on Land Rover Defender with New B5 SUV

BYD is set to challenge the Land Rover Defender in the UK market with its latest offering, the B5. This premium range-extender 4×4 boasts competitive off-road capabilities and supercar levels of power, making it a formidable contender in the SUV segment.

Originally launched in China as the Bao 5, the B5 is part of BYD’s new SUV sub-brand Fangchengbao. In the UK, it is expected to be badged as Denza, positioning it as a sibling to the premium brand’s Z9 GT shooting brake. Both models are scheduled to make their debut at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed, with sales expected to commence in 2026.

Denza, a joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz, was founded in 2010 and is now fully owned by the Chinese automaker. The decision to import the B5 to the UK aligns with BYD’s strategy to diversify its powertrain offerings and tap into new market segments, as previously reported by Autocar.

President of BYD, Stella Li, expressed confidence in the popularity of the SUVs in the UK market, citing the country’s affinity for large premium off-road vehicles. The B5 is anticipated to retain its specifications from the Chinese model, featuring a ‘DMO Super-Hybrid Off-Road’ platform and a range-extender system that delivers up to 677bhp and 561lb ft of torque.

With a substantial 31.8kWh battery providing a claimed EV range of up to 78 miles, the B5 showcases BYD’s commitment to expanding its hybrid offerings amidst evolving consumer preferences in Europe. The company’s upcoming Seal 06 plug-in hybrid saloon/estate and Denza Z9 GT PHEV further exemplify this strategic direction.

Joining the B5 at BYD’s stand is the Denza D9 MPV, a luxurious people carrier designed for a “business-class” experience akin to the Lexus LM. These new models underscore BYD’s dedication to innovation and sustainability in the automotive industry.

As BYD gears up to introduce the B5 and other exciting models to the UK market, automotive enthusiasts can look forward to experiencing cutting-edge technology and performance in a new era of premium SUVs. Stay tuned for more updates as BYD continues to redefine the landscape of sustainable mobility.
