Aerodynamic Innovation and Efficiency in Audi’s History

One of the most impactful projects in our technical discipline was the development of groundbreaking software technology for aerodynamics simulations. This project, while not initially in the public limelight, had a significant impact on the industry by providing us with a competitive edge in accuracy and flexibility.

Despite skepticism from others, we proved that the impossible was possible when we introduced this technology to the world, becoming the first team globally to achieve such a feat. This innovation paved the way for advancements in aerodynamics and efficiency in the automotive industry.

Aerodynamic innovation has always been a core principle of Audi’s Vorsprung durch Technik philosophy for over 50 years. Which Audi models made significant strides in aero design and efficiency throughout the brand’s history?

Two standout models in Audi’s history that revolutionized aerodynamic design and efficiency were the Audi 100 in 1982 and the Audi A2 in 1999. Both vehicles were driven by the goal of improving fuel consumption, leading to their aerodynamically-focused designs.

The Audi 100 introduced a streamlined greenhouse, flush glazing, and aerodynamically optimized body trim, setting new standards in automobile design. The A2, inspired by the work of Wunibald Kamm, featured proportions that prioritized aerodynamics, along with an optimized underbody and wheels.

As Audi transitions into the era of electric vehicles, the e-tron GT and A6 e-tron stand out as impressive achievements in aerodynamic design. These models demonstrate that top-notch aerodynamics can coexist with innovative, eye-catching design.

The e-tron GT utilizes active vehicle components to enhance aerodynamics, while the A6 e-tron incorporates numerous detailed engineering solutions to maximize efficiency.

What advantages does electrification offer for aerodynamic design and efficiency? Are there any challenges, and how is Audi addressing them?

Electrification presents several advantages for aerodynamic design and efficiency, such as the ability to optimize vehicle architecture without the constraints of traditional combustion engines. Electric vehicles also benefit from reduced drag and improved energy efficiency.

However, challenges such as managing battery thermal management and maintaining aerodynamic performance at high speeds exist. Audi addresses these challenges through innovative solutions, such as active aerodynamics and advanced cooling systems, to ensure optimal performance and efficiency in its electric vehicles.
