BYD Introduces Groundbreaking 1000kW Electric Car Charging Technology in the UK

BYD is set to revolutionize the electric vehicle charging landscape in the UK with the introduction of their new Denza Z9 GT shooting brake, equipped with 1000kW ‘flash charge’ technology. This cutting-edge functionality, initially launched in China on the BYD Han L saloon and BYD Tang L SUV, has the capability to add an impressive 249 miles of range in just five minutes – a significant advancement compared to current EV charging speeds.

Originally planning to deploy 5000 1000kW chargers in China within the first year, BYD has exceeded expectations by targeting 15,000 units in the same timeframe. Now looking to expand globally, the UK has been identified as a key market for the technology rollout, with plans to install the first megawatt chargers in the country by the end of 2025.

While the exact timeline for the UK deployment has not been specified, BYD is actively engaging with potential partners for the installation of these high-powered chargers. The integration of these devices into the UK’s national grid is still under consideration, with the possibility of leveraging on-site battery packs and solar panels for power supply.

Stella Li, vice-president of BYD, expressed confidence in the upcoming rollout, stating, “We are doing the work now, and then we will start by the end of this year. You will see them in different places.” The Denza Z9 GT is expected to hit the UK market in the first quarter of 2026, with the initial batch of megawatt chargers likely to be installed at Denza’s exclusive dealerships.

Li revealed that all Denza models will be equipped with this groundbreaking technology, setting a new benchmark for EV charging speed in the UK. The upcoming B5 SUV and D9 MPV from Denza, scheduled for release next year, will also benefit from this innovative charging infrastructure.

BYD’s 1000kW chargers feature dual 500kW cables that can deliver maximum output when plugged into the Z9’s charging ports simultaneously. Notably, these chargers are not exclusive to Denza vehicles, as Li emphasized their compatibility with other electric cars as well.

With BYD’s ambitious plans to introduce 1000kW charging technology in the UK, the landscape for electric vehicle charging is poised for a transformative shift, offering unprecedented speed and convenience for EV owners nationwide.
