Nio Onvo L90 among top 3 large SUVs in China with weekly sales of 1,976 units

Nio’s sub-brand Onvo has made a significant impact in the large SUV segment with its latest electric SUV, the L90. The model quickly gained popularity, delivering 1,976 units within the first 72 hours of its launch. This impressive performance placed the Onvo L90 as the third best-selling large SUV in China for the week of July 28 to August 3, trailing behind the Huawei-backed Aito M8 and Aito M9.

The strong initial acceptance of the Onvo L90 can be attributed to Nio’s more aggressive strategy in promoting the model. The company has been ramping up production and delivery speeds, with its Hefei factory operating at full capacity and even working overtime to meet the high demand. Nio’s founder, chairman, and CEO, William Li, highlighted the swift success of the L90, emphasizing the brand’s commitment to accelerating its operations.

In contrast, one of Nio’s main competitors in the domestic market, Li Auto, experienced a decline in weekly insurance registrations. The company saw a 25.95 percent decrease in registrations compared to the previous week, marking a new low over the past 25 weeks. Li Auto’s flagship SUV, the Li L9, recorded 727 insurance registrations, while the Li L8 saw 474.

To address the sluggish acceptance of its new all-electric SUV, the Li i8, Li Auto recently relaunched the model with reduced variants and a lower price point. This move reflects the shifting dynamics between Nio and Li Auto in the competitive electric vehicle market.

Nio’s overall performance, including its Nio, Onvo, and Firefly brands, remained strong, with 7,930 vehicles registered for insurance in China last week. This marked the highest registration figure in the past 14 weeks, underscoring Nio’s continued growth and market presence.

As Nio and Li Auto navigate the evolving landscape of the electric vehicle industry in China, their strategies and product offerings will play a crucial role in determining their success. The competition between these two prominent players is set to intensify as they strive to capture a larger share of the rapidly expanding market for electric SUVs.
